Dota 2 Trove of Terror Review: Is It Worth Buying?

Dota 2 released Trove of Terror on October 7, 2026, bringing a new Tidehunter Arcana, a returning Drow Ranger Arcana, and 15 Immortal item sets.

At first glance, this looks like an attractive collection, especially for players who enjoy rare cosmetics. But is it really worth spending money on?

After looking at the collection and reactions from the Dota 2 community, there are some things worth considering before opening your first chest.

Trove of Terror Dota 2

What Makes Trove of Terror Special?

The biggest attraction is undoubtedly Tidehunter's Maw of the Megalodon Arcana.

It completely transforms Tidehunter into a giant shark, with custom ability effects, animations, voice lines, and taunts. Even the detail of Tidehunter dragging what appears to be Kunkka's corpse makes this cosmetic particularly memorable.

The treasure also brings back Drow Ranger's Dread Retribution Arcana in its new Sepulchral Stalker presentation.

Alongside these two Arcana rewards, players can find 15 Immortal sets featuring heroes such as Tiny, Marci, Terrorblade, Anti-Mage, Pudge, and Death Prophet.

All 17 Hero Sets in Trove of Terror

Trove of Terror features 17 cosmetic rewards across 17 heroes. That includes 15 Immortal sets and two Ultra Rare Arcanas. Here's the complete list:

For cosmetic collectors, there is quite a lot to explore.

What Do Dota 2 Creators Think?

One of the most interesting reactions came from Nix, a well-known Dota 2 streamer.

He described Trove of Terror as the best treasure he had seen in Dota 2, particularly praising Tidehunter's new appearance and multiple styles.

However, his reaction also revealed something important: despite loving the Tidehunter Arcana, he admitted that he rarely plays the hero.

He was also less interested in the returning Drow Arcana, even suggesting that Tiny's cosmetic looked better.

This is a good reminder that an impressive cosmetic does not necessarily mean it is valuable to every player.

Another perspective comes from Frangie, who recorded himself opening 10 Trove of Terror chests while hunting for Tidehunter's Arcana.

His video captures the excitement and frustration of random openings. He received several different cosmetics and rare items, but the reactions showed that getting a rare reward is not always the same as getting the item you actually want.

For me, these reactions explain the biggest attraction and weakness of Trove of Terror: the collection looks excellent, but the reward you receive is unpredictable.

Is Trove of Terror Worth the Money?

This is where I would be more careful.

Each chest costs approximately US$5, depending on regional pricing. Here is how quickly the spending can increase:

ChestsEstimated cost
5$25
10$50
20$100
40$200
50$250

The treasure includes bad-luck protection, guaranteeing an Ultra Rare reward by the 50th opening if you have not received one earlier.

However, remember that the Ultra Rare tier includes both Tidehunter and Drow Ranger rewards. The 50th chest does not guarantee the specific Arcana you want.

There are also milestone rewards:

  • 12 chests: Obscene Eye Ball Tormentor cosmetic.

  • 40 chests: R'shan the Eternal Roshan cosmetic and Baby R'shan courier.

One more disadvantage is that these items cannot be sold or traded through the Steam Community Market. Valve restored limited gifting, allowing eligible sets to be gifted once within 30 days, but this is not the same as unrestricted trading.

That makes unwanted rewards less flexible than cosmetics that can be sold on the market.

Would I Spend My Money on Trove of Terror?

Personally, I think Trove of Terror is a great cosmetic collection, but I would not recommend chasing its Ultra Rare rewards without setting a spending limit.

Here is how I would look at it:

  • Tidehunter players: Definitely have a strong reason to consider this collection.

  • Dota 2 collectors: The variety of Immortal sets and two Arcana rewards makes it attractive.

  • Casual players: Opening a few chests for entertainment is understandable, but chasing a specific Arcana can become expensive.

My biggest concern is not the quality of the cosmetics. It is the amount of money players might spend trying to obtain one particular reward.

If you really want Tidehunter's Arcana, remember that opening 50 chests could cost around $250, and even the guaranteed Ultra Rare reward may not be the one you hoped for.

My take: Trove of Terror is one of the more attractive cosmetic collections in Dota 2, but I would enjoy it with a reasonable budget rather than treat it as something worth chasing at any cost.
