Dota 2 Wraith King Offlane Guide: Best Skill Build, Items and Strategy
Wraith King is one of the most straightforward heroes to play in Dota 2, but that does not mean every Wraith King game is easy. He can stun an enemy, summon skeletons to pressure lanes, recover health through lifesteal, and come back to life after being killed.
In the current patch, Wraith King is also a strong option for players who want to climb MMR without relying on complicated mechanics. He can farm efficiently, pressure towers, and force the enemy team to commit more resources than usual to bring him down.
For this guide, we will focus on Wraith King as an offlaner (position 3). The goal is to build a durable frontline hero who can initiate fights, create space, and still deal enough damage to threaten enemy cores.
This guide uses patch 7.41f as its reference. Always check the current in-game tooltips if a new balance patch changes an ability or item.
Roles
Primary role: Offlane / Position 3
Attack type: Melee
Main strengths: Durability, farming, physical damage, reliable stun, and a built-in second life.
Wraith King is a good choice when your team needs a frontline hero who can start fights and survive long enough for teammates to follow up.
Unlike some offlaners who depend heavily on landing difficult skill combinations, Wraith King has a relatively simple game plan. Farm your core items, look for opportunities to stun important targets, and force the enemy team to respond when you push objectives.
However, you should not treat Reincarnation as permission to fight without thinking. If the enemy team can kill you twice while your teammates are far away, your ultimate will not save the fight.
Capabilities
1. Reliable Stun
Wraithfire Blast gives Wraith King a direct way to disable an enemy. It is useful for starting a gank, stopping an escaping hero, or helping your team focus on a dangerous target.
2. Strong Farming Potential
Bone Guard summons skeletons that can help clear creeps and pressure lanes. When used at the right time, it allows Wraith King to farm more efficiently and create pressure in multiple parts of the map.
3. Good Sustain
Vampiric Spirit provides lifesteal, helping Wraith King recover health while attacking. This is useful when farming neutral camps and fighting around objectives.
4. Difficult to Kill
Reincarnation gives Wraith King another chance after death, provided its conditions are met and the ability is available. This makes him a difficult frontline target to deal with during teamfights.
Weakness
1. Limited Mobility
Wraith King has no natural blink or dash. If an enemy escapes beyond his reach, he may struggle to catch them without an item such as Blink Dagger.
2. Vulnerable to Kiting
Enemies with slows, long-range attacks, or strong movement abilities can keep their distance from Wraith King. A hero who cannot reach his target cannot make full use of his damage.
3. Reincarnation Has a Cooldown and Mana Requirement
Your ultimate is powerful, but you cannot rely on it in every fight. Keep track of its availability and mana cost before committing to an important engagement.
4. Can Fall Behind After a Bad Lane
Wraith King needs items to become a serious threat. If you lose your lane badly and cannot recover farm, you may struggle to provide enough damage or durability in the mid game.
Skills Explanation
1. Wraithfire Blast
Wraith King launches a projectile that damages and stuns an enemy, followed by damage over time and a movement slow.
This is your main tool for setting up kills. You can use it when your support lands a disable, when an enemy walks too far forward, or when your team needs to stop someone from escaping.
Do not waste the stun on a target your team cannot reach. If your teammates are too far away, the enemy may simply retreat after the disable ends.
2. Bone Guard
Bone Guard allows Wraith King to spend accumulated charges to summon skeletons. Charges are gained through creep kills and hero kills, making the ability useful when you are actively farming or fighting.
The skeletons can help clear waves and pressure structures, but they are not invincible. Use them when they can contribute to farming or push an objective rather than summoning them without a clear purpose.
One useful habit is to keep track of your charges before moving to another lane. If you already have enough charges, look for an opportunity to use them efficiently.
3. Mortal Strike
Mortal Strike gives Wraith King a chance to deal additional damage with an attack when the ability is ready.
This passive helps him trade hits, clear creeps, and threaten enemy heroes during fights. Once you have enough attack speed and damage, its impact becomes more noticeable.
Because the ability is passive, you do not need to spend mana to activate it. Your job is to get close enough to the enemy and keep attacking.
4. Vampiric Spirit
Vampiric Spirit provides lifesteal and improves Wraith King's ability to sustain himself during combat. It also interacts with his wraith form when he dies, giving him a brief opportunity to continue fighting before the death is finalized.
This ability is one reason Wraith King can remain active on the map without returning to base as often as some other melee heroes.
5. Reincarnation
Reincarnation allows Wraith King to return after death when the ability is available and its requirements are met. It also slows nearby enemies and interacts with Bone Guard to create additional skeleton pressure.
This is your biggest teamfight advantage, but timing matters. If you die while your team is too far away, the extra life may not achieve anything.
Before starting a fight, check your mana and ultimate cooldown. A Wraith King without Reincarnation is much easier for the enemy team to punish.
Wraith King Skill Build Level 1–20
This skill progression follows a common physical-damage offlane approach: take Wraithfire Blast at level 1, develop Bone Guard early for farming, and maximize Mortal Strike by level 10.
| Level | Skill | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Wraithfire Blast | Gives you a reliable stun for trading or setting up a kill. |
| 2 | Bone Guard | Helps you begin building skeleton charges. |
| 3 | Bone Guard | Improves your ability to pressure waves and farm. |
| 4 | Mortal Strike | Adds passive damage for trading and last hits. |
| 5 | Bone Guard | Increases your early farming potential. |
| 6 | Reincarnation | Unlocks your second-life ultimate. |
| 7 | Bone Guard | Maximize your skeleton ability. |
| 8 | Mortal Strike | Improve your physical damage. |
| 9 | Mortal Strike | Continue increasing your attack damage potential. |
| 10 | Mortal Strike | Maximize your passive damage ability. |
| 11 | Wraithfire Blast | Begin improving your stun after the main farming skills. |
| 12 | Reincarnation | Upgrade your ultimate. |
| 13 | Wraithfire Blast | Increase your disable and damage. |
| 14 | Wraithfire Blast | Continue improving your stun. |
| 15 | Talent | Choose the talent that suits your game. |
| 16 | Wraithfire Blast | Maximize your main active disable. |
| 17 | Attribute Bonus | Adds general stats when your basic skills are leveled. |
| 18 | Reincarnation | Upgrade your ultimate. |
| 19 | Attribute Bonus | Adds more general stats. |
| 20 | Talent | Select the talent that best fits your match. |
Talent Choices
Level 10
+8% Vampiric Spirit Lifesteal
+2 seconds Wraithfire Blast slow duration
The lifesteal option is useful when you want more sustain while farming and fighting. The slow duration is worth considering when your team needs more help keeping targets in range.
Level 15
+300 Health
+0.75 seconds Wraithfire Blast stun duration
Choose the health talent if you need to survive longer in the frontline. The stun talent can be valuable when your team has enough damage to capitalize on a longer disable.
Level 20
+50 Attack Speed
+300 Health
Attack speed can help you deal damage more consistently, while additional health is useful against teams that can burst you down quickly.
The best talent is not always the one that deals more damage. Consider the enemy lineup and your role in each fight before making your choice.
Item Build
Wraith King can use different item builds depending on whether he needs to farm quickly, initiate fights, or survive heavy enemy damage.
For this guide, the main approach is a farming-oriented offlane build with Phase Boots, Radiance, and Blink Dagger as the main progression.
Starting Items
Quelling Blade
Tango
Iron Branches
Magic Stick, when the lane has frequent spell usage
Gauntlets of Strength or another affordable stat item, depending on your starting gold
The goal is to secure last hits and remain healthy enough to stay in lane. You do not need to buy every listed item at the beginning; adjust your purchase to the available gold and the matchup.
Early Game Items
Magic Wand
A useful item when the enemy lane frequently uses spells. The extra health and mana can help you survive a close fight or cast Wraithfire Blast at the right moment.
Phase Boots
Phase Boots help Wraith King chase enemies and stay close enough to attack. The additional damage and movement utility are useful for an offlaner who wants to fight after completing his first core item.
Bracer
Consider Bracer if you need additional health and stats to survive a difficult lane. It is especially useful when you are taking frequent trades and cannot afford to lose control of your lane.
Core Items
1. Radiance
Radiance is a farming-oriented core item that adds damage and an aura that affects nearby enemies. It helps Wraith King clear waves and neutral camps while contributing damage during fights.
The downside is that Radiance requires a significant investment. If you are having a very difficult lane or your team needs you to fight immediately, delaying every useful item for Radiance can be a mistake.
Do not buy it automatically in every game. Consider your farm, the pace of the match, and whether the enemy team is likely to punish you for farming too long.
2. Blink Dagger
Blink Dagger helps solve one of Wraith King's biggest weaknesses: reaching his target.
You can use it to initiate with Wraithfire Blast, catch an enemy core, or move onto a support who is standing too far behind the frontline.
Blink is especially valuable when your team has enough follow-up damage to take advantage of your stun.
3. Aghanim's Shard
Aghanim's Shard can provide additional utility and damage through Wraith King's ability interactions. Consider it when the upgrade fits your current build and timing, rather than buying it automatically before more important items.
Alternative Items
Black King Bar
Consider BKB when magical damage and disables are preventing you from attacking. Wraith King needs to reach his targets, so surviving long enough to deal damage is often more important than buying another damage item.
Assault Cuirass
A strong situational option when your team needs armor, attack speed, and more physical pressure against enemy heroes and structures.
Desolator
Consider Desolator when you need additional physical damage to threaten enemy heroes and take objectives. It can be useful when your team wants to end the game rather than rely entirely on a long farming phase.
Orchid Malevolence
An option against mobile heroes who rely on spells to escape or fight. It is not a mandatory purchase, so make sure its active effect solves a real problem in your match.
Luxury Items
Abyssal Blade
Useful for additional control against important enemy targets, particularly when your team needs a way to keep a slippery hero in range.
Harpoon
Consider Harpoon when you need additional ways to close the distance and keep attacking a target.
Assault Cuirass
A good later purchase when your team benefits from stronger physical damage pressure and additional armor.
Your final inventory should reflect the game you are playing. A standard build is a starting point, not a reason to ignore enemy items or your team's needs.
Drafting
Wraith King works well when your team needs a durable frontline hero who can initiate fights and threaten objectives.
He is particularly useful when your teammates can follow up on Wraithfire Blast or take advantage of the time and space created by Reincarnation.
However, be careful against lineups that can kite you for a long time. Heroes with strong movement abilities, slows, or ways to keep their distance can make it difficult for Wraith King to reach the important targets.
Also consider the enemy's ability to deal with skeletons. Some heroes clear summoned units very efficiently, reducing the pressure Bone Guard can create.
Before picking Wraith King, ask yourself three questions:
Does my team need a frontline initiator?
Can my teammates follow up when I stun an enemy?
Will I be able to reach the enemy backline during fights?
If the answers are mostly yes, Wraith King can be a solid offlane choice.
Lane Strategy
Early Game
Your first priority is to secure farm without giving the enemy an easy opportunity to kill you.
Use Wraithfire Blast when you have a realistic chance to trade favorably or when your support can follow up. Avoid spending mana on a stun that does not lead to pressure.
Bone Guard can help you farm, but you should still pay attention to lane equilibrium and the enemy's position. Do not summon skeletons automatically if they are likely to be cleared without creating any value.
If the lane becomes difficult, focus on securing safe last hits and preserving your health. You do not have to win every trade to remain useful.
Watch the enemy support as well. If they leave the lane to place vision or help another lane, you may have a chance to farm more safely or pressure the enemy carry.
Mid Game
Once you have Phase Boots and are progressing toward your first major item, start looking for opportunities to influence the map.
Wraith King can farm waves and neutral camps efficiently, but do not spend the entire mid game hitting creeps while your team is losing every objective.
Look for fights around towers, important vision areas, and objectives where your team can follow up. Use Wraithfire Blast to initiate on a target your team can actually kill.
Bone Guard can also help you pressure a side lane. If the enemy team sends several heroes to stop your push, your teammates may be able to take an objective elsewhere.
Your job is not always to get the most kills. Sometimes the best play is to force the enemy to respond to your pr
